What Happens During a Hearing Test

A hearing test is a non-invasive method for accurately getting your hearing checked. You’ll sit in a booth and wear headphones that cover your ears to prevent any background noise from interfering. The audiologist or hearing care professional sends sounds into one ear at a time. Those sounds are in different tones. You signal when you hear a tone.

The purpose of the test is to measure the softest sounds you can hear in each tone. The test will also include getting an image of your eardrum and examining your ability to recognize speech.

How a Hearing Test Works

Your outer ear funnels sound down the ear canal and into your inner ear. Your inner ear’s auditory nerve signals to your brain when you’re able to hear a sound. If you have hearing loss, this test diagnoses it. There are different levels and types of hearing loss, such as mild hearing loss, that can be diagnosed from an auditory test. The test may also be used before you have ear surgery. With your hearing test results, we’ll be able to better determine what kind of hearing device you’ll need.
